Community Emergency Response Team

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program helps train people to be better prepared to respond to emergency situations in their communities. When emergencies happen, CERT members can give critical support to first responders, provide immediate assistance to victims, and organize spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site. CERT members can also help with non-emergency projects that help improve the safety of the community.

CERT training includes disaster preparedness, disaster fire

suppression, basic disaster medical operations, and light search

and rescue operations.

At Vashon Island Fire & Rescue CERT training prepares volunteers to act as interim first responders in the event of a disaster. The VIF&R sponsored CERT course requires graduates to complete 32 hours of classroom training and practical exercise. Additionally, there is as a day-long disaster city drill to practice the challenges of command, control and communication as a team. Graduates are encourages to become register emergency workers and attend quarterly meetings where specific skills are reviewed and organizational work is accomplished.
