VIFR PROFILE:

FF/EMT ERICH DOUGHLY

VIFR Volunteer Firefighter/EMT

Since August, 2006

Why did you become a firefighter?

“I was looking at the courses at Bates (Technical College), and thought, ‘Well, this sounds interesting.’ I never thought about doing anything like this before,” said Vashon Island Fire & Rescue’s volunteer Erich Doughly.

Erich received an Associate of Technology degree in Fire Service, and was able to volunteer as a firefighter.  Initially, he was not interested in becoming an Emergency Medical Technician, but as a firefighter, he felt those skills would be needed.

He is currently employed by a Pierce County ambulance company and works with various paramedics and medical personnel.  He finds his training and volunteer experience with VIFR to be very helpful in his career.

As a volunteer with VIFR, Erich has gone on 146 calls and has over 2,000 hours of training under his belt. One of the things he especially appreciates about VIFR is all of the training that Training Officer Cari Coll provides.

He came to VIFR already knowing how to fight fires, but the specialized training has been great, and as a volunteer, it’s all free of charge! He also likes the fact that VIFR is a smaller department, so he gets experience in a number of areas and loves the challenge of never knowing what the next shift will bring.

Finally, Eric stated that VIFR Paramedics are willing to share their knowledge, which in turns helps him sharpen his skills.

Erich is an active volunteer with VIFR, often working one or even two 24-hour shifts in a week. Other VIFR volunteers and paid staff appreciate his involvement with the department and his great attitude!
