Explorers

The Vashon Island Fire & Rescue (VIFR) Explorer Program is for individuals’ ages 15 through 18+. Its purpose is to provide youth with opportunities to explore the world of firefighting and emergency response while participating in hands on activities that build good character, citizenship and fitness.

Firefighting Explorer Posts are involved in a variety of programs and projects featuring training, skill development, and service projects. The program uses a hands-on approach rather than a lecture series.

The Explorer Program has been helping VIFR serve this community for the past twelve years. Explorers take part in departmental drills and classes, as well as responding on fire and medical emergencies.

Activities include: opportunities to participate in the District's Fire Academy and Special Teams training; community involvement at the Halloween, Christmas, Easter Egg Hunt and Fire Department Open Houses; teaching infant and child First Aid and CPR to island babysitters; offering hands-on activities at the Strawberry Festival; collaboration with off-island Explorer Posts and associated organizations.

For more information on the Program or activities, please call 463-4466.  To join, stop by the Fire Department Training office (on Bank Road) to pick up an application.
